The presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Adewole Adebayo, on Wednesday, heavily criticised President Bola Tinubu for not attending the signing of the National Peace Accord held in Abuja ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Adebayo stated that the President’s absence during Tuesday’s event sent a negative signal to political actors, law enforcement, and government officials regarding his commitment to the peace process.
Speaking in an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today, the SDP Chieftain called on President Tinubu to explain his absence at the event and publicly reaffirm his commitment to ensuring a peaceful electoral process.

“President Tinubu’s absence today indicates a lack of commitment to peace. It sends the wrong message to law enforcement and government workers that the President is not fully dedicated.
“He needs to clarify why he was absent and make a statement reaffirming his dedication to peace,” he said.
According to him, no matter the circumstances, the President should demonstrate that democracy and national security take precedence.
“The stability of the state relies on credible, free, and fair elections, which are crucial for establishing civil government,” he added.
This is as he reminded the President that the immediate past President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, late Muhammadu Buhari, attended the same event four years ago despite not being a candidate, highlighting the importance of leadership in supporting peace initiatives.
“Four years ago, Buhari was present, and he was not even contesting. It shows that leaders should believe in and support the peace process,” he added.”
